Review: More adventures for the girl of steel! - Got my season 2 Blu-Ray today and as a big fan of the show, I was thrilled to rewatch in lovely high definition Blu Ray. Firstly, as a Blu-Ray release you get a pristine picture and my home cinema system likes the multi channel audio. However as with season 1, it is a pretty disappointing set of extras. The best by far is a commentary by Kevin Smith and Andrew Kreisberg on the episode Supergirl Lives. Smith Is a fan and talks about the show rather than telling us how every shot was done. Other extras: There is a short featurette about the alien fight club in disc 1. A longer, 20 mins or so feature about the aliens and the way they came to the fore this season but doesnt go into the finale with the Daxamites or Lillian Luthor sending them all off in a spaceship in Exodus. There is a half hour or so video of the Comic Con panel from last year - which if you're a fan you probably saw or read about online over a year ago and features the actors talking cagily about the events of the season you just bought! There is a 3 or 4 minute chat with Kevin Smith and Andrew Kreisberg again, that says little more than the episode commentary and a 'did you know?' section with a bunch of 30second interviews that reveal very little of interest and are hardly worth it. No bloopers, no deleted scenes! Would love to have had the producers talk more about some of the bigger arcs of the season - Kara's love life, Alex coming out, the Luthors, the changes involved in moving production to Vancouver, the guest stars like Linda Carter and Teri Hatcher. As for the season as a whole, I liked it a lot. Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/ Supergirl remains totally delightful. Chyler Leigh as her sister Alex has some very strong stuff as she has huge developments In her character, as Alex comes to terms with her sexuality and begins a relationship with detective Maggie Sawyer. Alex also has some strong storylines dealing with her father, and the Alex and Kara sisterly bond remains at the heart of the show. The move to Vancouver meant Calista Flockhart was no longer a series regular but she does appear In the first 2 and last 2 episodes and it is only when she returns, you realise how much she has been missed, Cat Grant brings a snarky humour no one else does. The addition of Lena and Lillian Luthor is another strong point of the season. Lillian as played by Brenda Strong is a fantastic villain while Lena's growing friendship with Kara is delightful and Katie McGrath is great. Looking forward to Lena being a series regular in season 3. One of the more controversial additions is Chris Wood as Mon El, who starts as an annoying frat boy and surprise, surprise ends up as Kara's boyfriend. For some, the move to The CW meant a cute white boy was unsurprising but a step backwards for a show that had always been progressive. Still, Wood is actually a very funny and charming addition. However, the middle of the season sometimes seemed more like the Mon El show at times. He had more character growth than anyone and probably more screen time than anyone apart from Benoist. Mon El is also someone who constantly seemed to argue and ignore Kara and some questioned whether Supergirl's job is to fix dumb but cute guys! Fortunately, the last 4 or 5 episodes, they seemed to find a better balance, both in how much screen time he got over others and also how he treated Kara. Chris Wood (currently dating Melissa Benoist by the way!) is charming and unsurprisingly has good chemistry with Benoist. I'm not sure if this season ever quite matched the brilliance of season 1's Falling (Kara on red K) but there are a whole bunch of very good episodes, a stack of good ones and a few meh ones. The biggest missteps are probably to do with James Olsen. Having spent all of the first season with Kara mooning over him, it's all over by the end of episode 1 while the addition of the handsome white dude (Mon El) is set up as the new love interest pretty much immediately. James then takes over Cat Grant's job (yes, photographer Jimmy Olsen) but is dissatisfied and decides he wants to be a superhero for no reason apart from baddies breaking his dad's camera. It never really works and the charming Mehcad Brooks is not well served this year at all. Inevitably with no Cat Grant. Kara's work life takes a back seat, her new boss Snapper Carr just grumps and Kara's job just appears to involve interviewing her gal pal Lena! It's also worth pointing out there are 2 crossover events that might puzzle viewers. The episode Medusa ends with Kara jumping into a portal with Barry Allen and an adventure in Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow that obviously are not on this Blu Ray. More confusing, the episode Star Crossed has Darren Criss appear as the Music Meister and ends with Kara breaking up with Mon El. They are whisked off to a musical episode of The Flash (Duet) where they make up, however Supergirl fans watching the discs will be confused to find them happily together at the start of the very next episode. Overall I thought this was a very strong season. There was a bit too much Mon El at times, but we had so many great Alex moments, Tyler Hoechlin charming as Superman, great guest stars, the Luthors, and through it all, the always lovely Melissa Benoist who manages to be sweet and self effacing yet always Sells the drama. When Kara cries, you sniffle with her and her smile brightens any scene. if you liked season 1 you might miss Cat and Kara's work at Catco but this season was one of growth for the show and the characters. I just wish they put a bit more for us fans on the Blu Ray discs, Review: An excellent series - A truly excellent follow up to season 1 with Melissa Benoist outstanding as the main character , ably supported by a very good supporting team of very able actors. It is well written and never boring . The Blu Rays have excellent picture and sound quality. Basically if you liked season one, you'll love season two. As you've probably read in other reviews, the show has romance, lots of action and many characters known from the comic books appear. This complete second season set has all 22 episodes spread out over four Blu Ray discs.
