As to 1/16 of an inch, I think that is a little much. Most of the sanding takes place on the outer edge of the disc. As it rotates the dust is sucked into the 8 holes in the center of the disc. In order to flatten out the disc, you would have to put more pressure than normal. My experience with this brand of random orbit sander is that the more pressure you put on the sander, the slower the disc turns. You need to have at least a moderate rate of rotation to keep putting new cutting surfaces forward and to get a decent "scrambling" of sanding marks.If your sander is older, you may want to purchase a new disc. They are relatively inexpensive.
