Two fine for the French press and too course for the Chemex. The first time I used it I found the flavor very weak. One thing I love about coffee and chicory is its depth of flavor. I'm super picky about coffee. SUPER. PICKY. I'm talking specific brands, specific profiles, medium-dark roast, fresh ground, fresh brewed in my French press. My current favorite is Cameron's Jamaican something about mountains. It's a dark roast and has that robust in your face, yet never bitter with a flavor profile that has that needed hint of chocolateyness. But I needed something for the rest of the day once my morning cup is gone. This is it!So definitely, you don't need as much of this as a normal cup of coffee. Or you're going straight for a giant cup of espresso. The flavor is rich and profound, and just like all of my preferred coffees, it doesn't come off bitter or have that icky canned coffee taste it tastes like my fresh ground dark roast coffee! And it does give me a lovely coffee energy boost but I can still drink it and go straight to bed just like I used to with regular coffee. In the South, roasted chicory root (among other ingredients) was mixed with real coffee to stretch out supplies during periods of war, high tariffs, or just plain hard economic times. Once coffee prices dropped and supplies returned to the New Orleans docks, chicory coffee sales dropped off. However, now that we have high inflation and never-ending supply chain shortages, people are trying chicory-blend coffees once again.As to taste, that's highly personal, but keep in mind that CDM's coffee ingredient uses ordinary robusta, not premium arabica beans. It's also no accident that chicory-blend coffees are traditionally drunk with a heavy dose of 'au lait' to smooth out the taste. The vegetable simply darkens the cup and gives the illusion of a dark roast. But it's not high-end coffee.
