After a disc herniation in my tailbone, I need a donut seat like this in the car and on hard chairs; however, I use a different seat for my desk chair, which I need to be more structured for 8 hour stretches of time. It really helps with the pain I have by avoiding instigating the pain too much. It doesn’t avoid all of the pain, but it does a good job. The material is soft, which is pleasant, and the cushioning is also very soft and moldable. It will accommodate your anatomy. It’s comfortable to sit on for hours at a time. That said, I would not recommend something this cush/pliant for something you’re going to sit in for more than 3-4 hours or something that needs to be more ergonomic, like your work desk. The moldability of its shape, since there’s no structure to it, makes it great for car seats because it will bend to fit. I can see it being good for camp chairs too. I had a very nice Lay-Z-Boy recliner (though I never use the “recline” feature—it is more comfortable for me to have a rocking recliner and use an ottoman so I can keep my knees bent, and provide more relief of my lower back at the correct angle for me). When my back pain got considerably worse, my recliner was about 6 years old. I paid several hundred dollars for a Laz-y-Boy repair man to reinforce/replace the springs in it and replace the foam cushions. That, plus a lumbar support pillow and heating pad, kept the recliner usable for me for about another 4 years. Then, I decided to just buy a new one. I bought another Lay-Z-Boy, but still use a lumbar support pillow (one that goes as high up on my back as I could find: 17 inches), & of course, a heating pad about 80% of the time. I found trying to use a seat support on my new chair caused me to sit too high in it, and all the support it provided was hitting me wrong. I guess my point is: these types of supports can definitely help (depending on how severe your spinal problems are), or enable you to extend the life of a chair you like, but at some point, you may need to upgrade whatever you’re sitting in, and shop with back support as your top priority. Also, just like with mattresses: stay away from “all memory foam” construction. It breaks down over time and becomes a spongy mess. Look for good old fashioned firm spring support, though it is usually more expensive.
