The original Hydroton brand expanded clay is a unique, lightweight expanded clay aggregate made in Germany. This natural clay is mined, formed into pellets, then kiln fired at high temperatures to cause the clay to expand into tough, lightweight balls. Clay naturally has balanced capillary action, with an ideal surface structure. Hydroton brand expanded clay is semi-porous and generally does not float like other products can. For best results, rinse all expanded clay before use. It is reusable as long as it is thoroughly cleaned between uses. 50 liter bags feature an easy pour spout. Size specification is 8-16 mm.

This one is perfect as the balls are almost uniformly sized, not too big not to small. And what I love about this brand is it can be cleaned easily. Just after 3 washes, water is clear already.

**Q: How big a bag or how many bags would I need for 1-2 inches deep layer in a 20 gallon long fish tank?**
A: this does not go in the fish tank. These balls are for Aquaponic use. That is, you have a separate container, usually above the tank, where you grow plants, usually herbs. The 10 liter bag is huge and will handle a container above a 20 gallon tank. I think that you get 3x what you need for aquaponic use.

Fish tank has aquarium gravel in it, you do need 10-20 pounds of aquarium gravel in a 20 gallon tank

**Q: Will this bag fill 4, 6in net pots?**
A: yes, is a big bag.

**Q: Cant you use these in the bottom of your planters under coco coir n or soil?**
A: It can, but it’s not “best practice” or whatever - you can end up with perched water, which can be harmful to plant roots.

**Q: Can these be used in the bottom of a vivarium?**
A: Xthey can serve as drainage. They dont hold much water.
