A 15-watt lamp will cover approximately 100 square feet; a 30-watt lamp will cover approximately 200 square feet. To kill black mold from 8ft away you would need to run a 50w lamp for 1 hour. How long you run it will be based on the contaminate or concentration of contaminate you have and the distance from it. Remember, it does not work on surfaces that the light cannot directly hit (shadows). So either move the unit around or use several lamps. 8hrs or more may be required. Based on all that, I run my lamp for at least 1 hour per area to insure at least 40,000 J/cm2 to kill most spore forming bacteria. I also move the units about to reduced areas where the light does not touch. It all depends on what you want to kill, distance, and wattage. A while back I found a chart that says 8hrs for an 800 sqft room with a 100w bulb. High intensities for a short period and low intensities for a long period are fundamentally equal in lethal action. The inverse square law applies to germicidal ultraviolet as it does to light: the killing power decreases as the distance from the lamps increases. The average bacterium will be killed in ten seconds at a distance of six inches from the lamp. Keep in mind that as the bulbs are used, they lose intensity over time; therefore you must run them longer. As with anything, read the warning labels. These not only kill bacteria and molds, it will kill your plants and cause you and your pets physical harm. As far as insects like mites, it may have an effect, but it won't kill them. Other side effects are fading of furniture, 10% reduction in plastics, just like leaving things out exposed to the sun. You will notice a burning smell after operation, unlike an ozone generator that has a medical or electrical smell. You can also add an ozone generator to get in those areas that the light can't reach. For that I made my own units that pump out 10g/hr. Although the frequency is 254nm, there is no real ozone generation in an open room from this 55w lamp. There are other systems that may have a UV-C lamp and an Ozone generator built into the same box. This is not one of them. There are basically two methods of producing ozone...ultra-violet and corona discharge. Corona discharge is the most common and creates ozone by applying high voltage to a metallic grid sandwiched between two dielectrics. The high voltage jumps through the dielectric to a grounded screen and in the process, creates ozone from oxygen present in the chamber. Kind of like how lightning creates ozone. Ultra-violet (UV) light can create ozone when a wavelength at 254 nm (nanometers) hits an oxygen atom. That's how the Sun creates the Ozone layer in the atmosphere. The molecule (O2) splits into two atoms (O), when combined with another oxygen molecule (O2) it forms ozone (O3). Typically this is done in a camber to get them to combine and the gas is then pumped out of the chamber and the process repeats. Ozone has a half life of 30 minutes as it reverts back to O2, or even less as it reacts to dust, plants, contaminates, and even temperature. Eventually given enough time it all reverts back. If you want to measure output or residual ozone, search for a Draeger tube or an Ozone Monitor/Sensor. I recommend using UV-C lamps and an Ozone generator together if your really want to make sure. I use this unit for bathrooms and made my own large UV-C lamps for other rooms, along with my own Ozone generators that fill the entire house. Ozone gets into the smallest cracks if you have can generate enough. Yes, you should vent after the Ozone generators run with that much concentration. My vacation cabin has several 10g/hr ozone generators running 4 times a day for 30 min each when I'm not there. It takes about 3 hours to remove all the residual ozone out of the bedding, clothes, walls...
