I can see where someone would do that and get the first mouthful of pure syrup. (Thus the cough syrup comments from some people). Today I noticed a score on the top that says tear here and pour! I used scissors to cut the top off of the pouch and put the contents into a solo cup and mixed it up with a spoon. Perfect flavor and texture and the taste is consistent first bite to the last. Too bad I waited until the 11th pouch to read the directions! It’s very good. My only complaint is that it’s very awkward to consume straight from the container. I would recommend an insulated cup w a strong straw. Or just a good straw. I wrap mine in a paper towel to keep my hand/fingers freezing. You also need to squeeze it up frequently to mix because some parts melt faster.
