This classic, straight-sided, 1.6-quart saucepan features a base made of seven different alloys. A copper disk encapsulated in the base provides optimal heat distribution, and is welded around the side of the saucepan for additional safety in case of overheating. In addition, no water, fat, or dirt can penetrate the base, which measures 6.3 inches in diameter. The rest of the saucepan is constructed of polished stainless steel, known for its excellent heat conduction and versatility. A unique surface treatment removes impurities from the surface, so the stainless steel remains silvery white, even after years of cleaning in the dishwasher. The stockpot's stay-cool, cast stainless-steel handles are welded without rivets (where food and grease often stick). A heavy, stainless-steel lid fits tightly over the drip-free rim, which makes pouring prepared foods quick and clean, even at the table. It is everything a saucepan could be: heats evenly; cleans up easily in the dishwasher; does not have any rivets etc. on the inside to trap food; has smooth finish to release food; and looks really good. I don't find it heavy; it just has the feel of a very well made item. I have a Cuisinart pan I bought a year or two ago to do the same job and it drove me crazy--always forming hot spots and I had to keep it on almost the lowest heat and stir almost constantly--so much for Cuisinart's sandwich construction.
