It's something of a tinted thin plastic mat with magnetic strips. However, I got it because I don't need a privacy screen full time (mostly for airplanes), and I wanted to try a more textured surface for use with the pencil. It's not as dark as most other privacy screens and it works far better in landscape than portrait. For me, the ease of application and re-use is worth the trade-offs.
