The grain orientation was good on my example and the handle had a smooth finish to it. I am not sure if the handle has a wax coating on it because it did not feel like a varnish but it definitely was not bare wood. I do not like that the head has epoxy on it and I can not tell if there is an actual wedge under all the epoxy but I can tell you that after moderate use the head is still on tight. The edge arrived dull but without too much file work I was able to get it sharp and usable. Overall I am impressed with this axe for the money.
