The black developed over time and was not on the outside. It was mounted on a motorcycle. Review: Looks Ok, but unusable - I agree with a few others that this compass is all but useless on a bike. I mounted it numerous places but cannot find a location that the needle doesn't bounce around and vibrate horribly- even though it is fluid filled. It is simply impossible to read when driving. There are no electromagnetic interference devices on my bike. I am also not very fond of the mounting bracket (I did purchase the handlebar mount too). I suppose it might be useful as a navigation tool if I pulled over along side the road and shut off my motorcycle, but what's the point?
