From the Manufacturer               The Greenlee 1543 LAN ProNavigator Tester tests data and telephone cable for proper pairing for EIA/TIA-568A and B, Token Ring, 10 Base T and common Cat5,Cat5e, Cat6 configurations. It also tests continuity of 50 and 75 ohm coaxial cables with BNC terminations. Features one-button, simple testing (PASS/FAIL or fault find) to detect: good connections, opens, crossed wires and split pairs. Simple PASS/FAIL test results in one second - quickly move on the next test site. Auto-off feature to preserve battery life. Perfect for tracing wires with tone and remote lights. ## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this tester indicate where (i.e. 5 ft from the end) in the line a fault would be?**
A: No.  This tester can only verify if the copper wire is/is not cut or shorted somewhere along the entire length of cable.  Locating a fault requires a more sophisticated tool.  Check out FLUKE Networks for that type of tester.

**Q: Does this set come with an adapter for CATV "F" connectors?**
A: Yes, included in the package are 2 BNC to CATV F, and 2 BNC to RCA/phono.

**Q: What does split and cross stand for if that light comes on?**
A: Ethernet cables transmit data using the 1,2,3, and 6 wires (relative to the RJ45 connector plug) of the 8 wires in the CAT5e cable.  If the Paladin tool shows a red "split" light while you are testing the 1/2 pair wires, that means you crimped the 1/2 wire pair on the start end to the wrong pair location on the finish end (perhaps the 4/5 pair).  The Paladin tool is telling you the wires are indeed connected, but the 1/2 pair has been "split" and landed on the 4/5 pair location.  The cable will not pass data if the wire pairs are "split" therefore paired wires are not connected properly on both ends.  If the Paladin tool shows a red "cross" light while you are testing the 1/2 pair, that means you connected the 1/2 wire pair on the start end to the 3/6 pair location on the finish end, thereby creating a crossover cable.  Most Ethernet cables are "straight through" cables, where the 1/2 pair and 3/6 on the start end must be wired to the 1/2 and 3/6 locations on the finish end, respectively.  These days not very often that you need to wire a crossover cable.  A crossover cable might work if both NICs on either end are auto-sensing and will sense how the pairs are wired end-to-end.  However, although it might work, troubleshooting a problem in the future will be complicated because the cable was wired using a non-standard method.

I love this thing. After too many experiences troubleshooting phantom errors that were just the inevitable bad crimp job, I bought this.With this, you can run your CAT6 unterminated to get the perfect length, terminate one end and connect the slave tester. Cut the other end to length and terminate and then test. Depending on the specific error it gives you, you can reterminate or just give the crimper a tighter squeeze.If you're doing advanced stuff and a plain pass/fail will not do, it even tells you which pairs are off, cross, open, short, split.Explain to your company that this thing will pay for itself with the first bad connection that it catches (depending on your bill rate)It even does coax and comes with a bunch of dongles for easy hookup.Thoughts:You don't need the optional case, since this has clips, you'll just clip it to your bag and be done with it.I wish that it would test to see your top bandwidth over the line or something, but that's way pricey tech.It should come with the 568-A and 568-B diagrams printed on the unit somewhere, but doesn't. Make your own from a mailing label and stick it on.

This is not a fancy device, and it may be a little over priced. It comes with a battery too, so no need to purchase one. Dont use the line tracing ability, it is just a waste. By a tone generator and a probe, fluke works good and so does the fox and hound set. This piece is perfect for testing wire that your making BEFORE you run it. Great for short cables as you can easily see both ends. Longer runs...well you can see all the information on one display, but you absolutely MUST know that you have connected the other end to the proper cable. The screen is easy to understand, and it will even test your sheilding on the STP. If the lights are solid, your fine. If you see flashing, something was not right, so look at hte device closer to see which one. Pretty simple concept that can be used as a distance.The auto power off feature is a little annoying, you have five seconds or so to test.
