The grade that I bought was superfine, which probably wouldn't do what you want. My own method is to use abrasive paper, as used for car body repairs. You'll need a range of them, but they can usually be bought in packs of various grades. The higher the grade, the finer the abrasive. I suggest you start with something like 600 grit. If this has no effect, use increasingly lower grades until you see some results. As far as possible, rub in the direction of the scratches. Then work back up the grades, till you're at 2500 grit (or higher). By this time, you should be seeing some kind of reflection from the metal. Now move on to the wire wool, starting at coarse and working up to superfine. You shouldn't have to rub hard by now. You'll be left with a patch that's shinier than the rest of the metal, so go over the whole area with the superfine grade. Finally, polish the metal. Again, without knowing how bad the damage is, I can't say how effective this method will be. If the scratches are very deep, you might be better to use car body-filler. If the metal is to be repainted anyway, then the repair will not show. You don’t say what the kayak is made of. If it too is metal, then the above method will be appropriate. If it's glass-fibre, or some other plastic, you might be better to use a suitable filler which, once set, can be rubbed down for a smooth finish. If ever there was test, this has to be at the high end. I wish now I had bought stronger grade.
