I just let time and use of bag get rid of smell. Also, try sticking bag in plastic trash bag and sealing it with baking soda in a dish that worked for another bag I had. It looks and feels handcrafted, more like what you'd find in a crafts fair than a store. That has its tradeoffs - this is no Gucci bag, with polished leather and flawlessness - but for me the natural imperfections add character. Hopefully it holds up well!UPDATE: this bag has seen some tough days but I am always getting remarks on it. It’s developing the aged leather look which people are really liking (myself included).BUT - it’s stitchwork isn’t top quality, so I’ve had to keep an eye on that and do some mending. The shoulder strap could be better and especially if you’re trying to shorten the strap (I use a clip to hold down the excess strap; might see a leatherworker to cut and stitch it), and the clips/latches had to be replaced because the original ones just fell apart after 2-3 years.Still, I’ll keep it a 5-star rating. Anything that gets daily use will have wear and tear. I have owned lots of nice leather bags; I have owned lots of cheap leather bags. In my opinion, this is a beautiful bargain. Like anything else, if you care for it regularly and lovingly, it will last. You can condition a PU leather-look bag with auto cleaner and it will last a good while. I anticipate my bags softening, not that was is unreasonably stiff when I got it.
