And definitely less expensive.Not being into tennis, I didn't have any tennis balls on hand, so I ordered a can of three from Amazon when I ordered this book.I had been having some success using a soccer or volleyball-sized ball, but sometimes it got a little scary, because I really couldn't target any particular spot, and I worried that I might get too rambunctious, and maybe screw my back up even worse.But I can tell you that more than 75 visits to the chiropractor over two-plus years have not helped at all, and the volleyball was at least one source of relief, even if it wasn't perfect.From reading the reviews, (before I got my book) I couldn't tell exactly how you were supposed to use the ball - some said up against the wall, but I figured that on the floor was probably the way it would actually work the best. And that's what he says to do in the instructions.But I have found that keeping a ball on my bedside stand is a godsend, because when my back is really giving me grief, I can reach out and grab the ball and place it under my back, on exactly the right spot, on top of the mattress. And being on the mattress means that it doesn't roll around, but stays right on that spot until you move it to a different location. Plus, since the mattress is softer than the floor, it sinks in a little, and gives you a more "gentle" massage on the sore spot.Just lay on the bed on your back, with your right leg hanging off the side of the bed from the knee down, and place the ball in the small of your back, which you can move around from spot to spot. Instant adjustment - and it will rejuvenate you virtually immediately.I don't hold any illusions that it will completely banish my back pain - that would be too much to expect - but I can shout out a big hooray for the fact that it does give me some sweet relief, albeit temporary, when I need it.Anybody who has lower back pain has probably tried just about everything they have ever seen to try to alleviate it, and most of them have probably not worked very well, but one thing I can say, and which I am very grateful to be able to say:The tennis ball works, and every time I use it, I do get relief, and that's saying a bunch. It may not last forever, but when you're hurting in your lower back, you're very grateful for anything that helps, even if only temporarily. Update: Nov. 11, 2015PS: The tennis ball techniques have worked very well, but I had a desire for a slightly softer ball, and perhaps a little bigger diameter.So I ventured down to the drugstore, where they have a myriad of balls to choose from, and found a softball-sized ball, about 4" in diameter. This book is packed full of chiropractic- and other hookum pseudomedicine jargon and tone... and completely devoid of scientific references to back up its claims... and has at least one anatomical error (that might be more of a word-sized typo than a misunderstanding). I should have hated it, but I've tried many other things and bought this book as part of desperate "I'll read _anything_ to make this go away" effort.And I'll be d@mned if lying on a freakin' tennis ball for a couple minutes didn't do more for my aching-for-months-at-this-point lumbar region than anything else I've tried. It made my pain -- I kid you not -- go away for a little while.As someone with a rigorous science degree and experience working in medical/clinical research, I should be appalled by the tone and very notion of this book, but it's doing more for me than weeks of ibuprofen, ice, heat, and stretching have done. So what the heck do I know? I don't believe it's a _cure_, but it's at least temporary pain relief (for me, the relief doesn't last real long, but it is real) and easy to administer -- thus, a valuable tool in the fight against pain. I'm going to put my Hard Science Diploma in a drawer so it doesn't have to watch, then give Mr. Price's recommended full routine a fair shot.Still, I doubt this will be the only thing those of us with bad lower back pain will need to do: We need to lose weight (the single greatest thing to alleviate and prevent back pain... I'm workin' on it, but we all know it's hard!), exercise in ways appropriate to our healing backs as they recover, lift and move carefully, watch our postures, shoes, chairs, etc etc etc. But, man, I gotta say, my mornings have gotten a *LOT* better since I thought, "ok, I doubt it could _hurt_. I have a tennis ball around here somewhere...."Give it a shot.Also, as has already been noticed, Mr. Price deserves major karma points for *not* putting out a line of branded balls and claiming they're the only thing that works, at 10x the price of a tennis ball, golf ball, or baseball. I like the simplicity that Price gives the techniques including pictures showing where to place the ball, how to do the technique, tips and precautions.
