Installed in a position that will be in the shade when summer arrives and this morning the temp outside temp was just at freezing when dawn broke and checking the thermometer it was also showing 0 - there looks to be 2 faint lines on the glass tube that I assume are to align the thermometer in the casting (looks to align to 10 & 25 degrees) - seems to be working as expected, it's easy to read when facing it. To be fair we not looking for 2 decimal place accuracy more an indication/confirmation of the approx temp, the aesthetics of the product are equally important and this product fulfils that criteria very well - it's of a good size and looks impressive on the 8" oak gatepost it's attached to. I want to look through my window to wall 6ft away ?** A: I'm afraid it will not be possible. I bought one hoping to see from my sitting room window (18 inches away) and it was impossible to read. I've put it up but cannot use it - a very expensive mistake. **Q: Is this made from metal or plastic** A: This is made of very heavy metal but, I found it very difficult to read ( so a very expensive mistake) I think if the mercury was red instead of blue there might not have been a problem.
