We've had this nearly 2 years now and they held up well **Q: Can the strap be exchanged out or is it permanently attached?** A: The strap is sewn in - it could be modified to use another strap, with a little effort. Aside from that, this is an excellent bag - it has become my mobile office on business trips, working at home - everywhere. **Q: Is there a side water bottle pocket?** A: No honestly this is great for a kid in elementary school not so much for an adult or even someone in high school **Q: Does anyone have any info on how to wash/clean this bag? This bag wouldn't happen to be washing machine-safe, would it?** A: All of our products have the Rain Defender which is a dirt and water-resistant coating on the entire surface of our bags. We recommend cleaning our totes and bags with a damp cloth.
