At the upper reaches of the adjustment scale, the tamper base lowers at all. I had to screw the adjustment ring almost all the way down to get sufficient depth for the spring to be effective. I also found the adjusting ring to be less smooth in operation than tampers with internal threading for that purpose (having compared nine similar tampers on Amazon).
