The material is very thick and substantial, so it holds its rectangular shape over the mixer. It fit my Kitchen Aid mixer well. I am not using the outside pocket for tools. I just store the standard beater in the bowl, under the cover, and keep the other parts in a cabinet, but you could easily store the dough hook or a booklet in the pocket. I purchased the cover because I had been lifting the mixer out of a pantry cabinet when I needed to use it, but the weight of the mixer was making it too hard for me to keep doing that. I now store it on my counter and the cover keeps it clean. The fabric does have a sheen, as described. The cover is substantial enough that I think I will easily be able to wipe it off with a damp cloth.
