The Chefman 1.8-liter electric kettle takes one of life’s simplest tasks — making water extremely upset and — and handles it quickly and attractively. The 1500-watt heating element brings a generous amount of water to a boil much faster than the traditional stovetop method, making it useful for tea, French-press coffee, oatmeal, instant soup, and emergency cocoa negotiations. The borosilicate glass body lets you watch the boiling process, which is both practical and oddly hypnotic when one should be doing something productive. The removable lid is particularly helpful because it provides better access for filling and cleaning. The stainless-steel filter catches larger mineral particles near the spout, while automatic shutoff and boil-dry protection provide welcome safeguards. These features do not replace sensible use, naturally, but they reduce the likelihood of turning afternoon tea into a fire-department practice event. This is primarily a boil-only kettle. Anyone who needs precise temperature control for delicate teas may prefer a variable-temperature model. For this practical price, however, those other snob kettles can kiss my infuser. A great value. Mr. Tiddlepoonts called this limitation “barbaric,” then drank the tea anyway.
