## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this device come with preinstalled RAM or does that need buying separately like the hard drive?**
A: Depends on the seller: there are various configurations from bare-bones to loaded with large SSD and lots of RAM. There usually seems to be room for only a single strip, even though there are two sockets, so if you want to upgrade, get the largest single strip.

**Q: How hot does the case get when running**
A: Make sure it is ventilated. Mounted on edge is best, and not near a warm surface.

**Q: How does an SSD fit into this? Do I need to buy a separate bracket? Am looking to run plex server on it. Thank you**
A: Standard 2.5 " SSD. Best to use a thin one for heat management.

**Q: Does the HDMI output audio as well as video?**
A: Yes it does.

Excellent little headless server (OpenBSD 6.5/amd64)

*by M***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 May 2019*

Very nice little box. With an SSD it really is effectively silent, although if you literally press your ear to it you can hear there must be a fan in there somewhere.I added 8 GB of RAM (be sure to get the low voltage stuff; I used (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006YG8X9Y) and a 120 GB SSD (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07G3KRZBY). I also got a dummy HDMI plug just in case but I didn't need it: the box runs quite happily without it or a keyboard.Installation was a breeze but I did find it helpful to take a few photos to make sure I got everything back in the right way around. No need to remove the WiFi module.OpenBSD installation went without a hitch and recognises everything significant apart from the WiFi, so far as I can see: DMESG======OpenBSD 6.5 (GENERIC.MP) #0: Wed Great build quality and performance

*by G***D on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 March 2016*

i bought the gigabyte brix to function as a plex media server as my old windows machine is getting tired and takes up a lot of room in the garage. The brix is nice and compact, and of great build quality. Its well packaged, and comes with clear instructions for fitting RAM and an SSD. My only gripe was fitting the RAM - the prongs/clamps are rather tight and at one point i was expecting something to snap, but slowly pushing down resulted in the RAM clicking into place nicely. The SSD connector has the power and data in one connector, which is great and was easy to fit. The instructions recommend you detach it from the motherboard first, but i wasnt keen on that and just attached the SSD. The SSD then screws into a cage which attaches to the lid, very nice design. The outer case screws are very long, but easy to get out and the lid is well fitted. Overall great build quality. I went for an 8GB SODIMM ram chip and performance is great running Ubuntu Server 14.04 (more on that later) with a 128GB Crucial SSD.The box runs very quiet and you have to get up close to hear anything. On first boot you can jump to the BIOS with F2 or the DEL key and then choose to boot to EFI Shell (command info: [...]) or a bootable device. I imaged a USB drive with Ubuntu server and booted from that straight to the Ubuntu installer. Installation took less than 20 minutes and i had a fully functional linux server in no time at all. Once that was done i downloaded, extracted and installed Plex Media Server using wget and dpkg respectively. If you want more detail about the install and configuration side of things, i will be posting a blog article about it soon and will update this review with the link.Unfortunately i cannot comment on the Wifi or Bluetooth capabilities of the device as i have hard wired it to a switch with CAT6 cable for optimal network performance.Overall i am very happy with the Gigabyte Brix. A high quality quad core machine with 8GB ram for under £120 - what is there not to like.

    Waste of Money

*by C***D on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 May 2017*

I was looking for a couple of cheap units to build two PC's to be used on two meeting rooms just to do Skype Calls and a couple of presentations. This units seem good for the price, so I got a couple of them. They are well build and look really good, but the problem started straight away as I connected the SSD and RAM, tried to power up... Nothing, just a black screen. I've tried the other unit, same problem. After spending all day trying to figure out what was wrong, I found on several forums loads of people complaining about the same issue...Was I just unlucky I got two faulty units? I don't know, but never again I would get this and I won't recommend you to "play the lottery" with this. Just spend a bit more money and get an Intel NUC.
