I hesitated to order this book, but I'm really glad I did. I'm a fan of rulerwork (not being at all proficient at free-motion), but in Rulerwork Quilting Idea Book, both techniques are shown combined, if one chooses, to amplify the possibilities of designs. Longarm templates/rulers are quite expensive, and it can be prohibitive to build up an arsenal of them. The author takes a few simple ones of varying brands and shows lots, I mean lots, of both standard and creative ways to use them. A case is made early-on for why ruler work is a useful technique, and many hints are given for both domestic machine and longarm use of them. The book is exceptionally well-organized, including an Index of Designs at the end. Much appreciated is the use of one background color for the ruler work illustrations, and another (yellow) for the accompanying pages with supplemental free-motion fillers. I've already marked a few pages of things to try/adapt for the next quilt to go on my frame. There are many books of machine quilting designs out there, and this ranks, in my opinion, as one of the best. It should be helpful both for traditional and modern quilt styles. I think I learned more from this book than from several hands-on classes with nationally known teachers. This is a small, spiral-ringed book (6" X 9" - it is pictured in one photo on top of another 8.5" X 11" book). Featuring Bernina rulers, this book shows how to do 59 basic quilting designs (I have a HandiQuilter and not a Bernina, but the rulers are very similar). This book is appropriate for beginning to intermediate quilters. All the concepts are demonstrated step-by-step, with very clear pictures. This is a great introduction to ruler work, especially if one has not taken a class in using rulers with your long arm machine. I recommend this book! Please mark if you find my review helpful. Thank you so much! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best ruler work reference book to date! *by C***N on February 17, 2018* Amanda Murphy specifically discusses how on the long arm one holds the ruler stationary, but moves the sewing head, where on a sit down machine you have to move the fabric and the ruler simultaneously. I knew that-but having you describe the action really helped me understand, why I have more trouble with one than the other, and how I can overcome the different challenges. No one else has talked about the technique needed like you have. The ideas for quilting are extremely helpful, This is the most useful book I’ve bought on ruler work & quilting!
