The grease in the auto shop is used at the connection between spark plugs and the coils, to improve electrical connection may well prevent moisture and corrosion, and all that good stuff. As well as lube the connections for future disconnection. Probably what you should be looking for is a properly installed electrical connection and not to rely on some gel.
