I previously had surgery on right thumb back in 2012 and I've had difficulties keeping my grip during exercises like shrugs and deadlifts. I train for ice hockey and so we do weight lifting as a part of my hockey training program. I was struggling with my deadlifts because of my grip strength. I could not finish a set because my hands and wrists would simply give out. It was very frustrating. My trainer recommended that I invest in straps, but I kept putting it off thinking it was a "weak" thing to do, but on the contrary- it has made me stronger because I actually am able to do my sets AND do them with heavier weight because I don't have to worry about losing the grip.
