Ideal for full sun locations, this low-maintenance plant thrives in various soil types, making it a perfect addition to any garden. ## Description The Evergreen Magnolia is without question one of the most magnificent trees that we can grow. Magnolia grandiflora Galissonniere is one of the hardiest of all the Evergreen Magnolias. Originally introduced into the gardens of Versallies, France, in the early 18th Century by way of seeds collected by Michel Rolland Barrin, Comte de la Galissoniere, from the tree's native Southern United States. It arrived in the Uk around the beginning of the 1800's. A truly magnificent tree, distinct conical shape, large glossy green leaves with a reddish brown underside and large (up to 25cm) creamy white exquisitely fragrant flowers that are produced rather erratically all summer and in to early autumn. The tree should be planted in a full sun, sheltered location, preferably against a south facing wall, however in a sunny, warm and sheltered location this variety can grow as a free standing tree. It will then form a splendid short trunked concial tree. They are not fussy as to soil type and will grow on chalky soils as long as there is a good layer of topsoil. They do not like drought and will not tolerate waterlogged soil. Really a very beautiful tree. This plant can be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend the use of a controlled release fertiliser such as Osmocote 8-9 month, applied in mid spring. One application will supply all the nutrients required for a whole year. ## Features - Magnolia grandiflora Galissonniere is one of the most magnificent evergreen trees. - Creamy white exquisitely fragrant flowers that are produced rather erratically all summer and in to early autumn - Superb architectural value with large glossy green leaves which have a brown rust coloured underside. - Grow in a full sun sheltered location in moist soil.
