The discs come in a slimline box, with the frontispiece having an attractive view over Oxford at sunset. Each disc in the set sits on top of the previous one. This is not a particularly good way of maintaining the CDs in mint condition, but it is practical, allows for altering the order of the stories, and does save on the bulk of the box set. The set itself contains three Inspector Morse stories – "Last Seen Wearing", "The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn", and "The Wench is Dead". So too, it has Colin Dexter reading one of his short stories, "The Double Crossing" – with its focus on Lewis. The leading roles in the recording are played by John Shrapnel (Morse), and Robert Glenister (Lewis). It does not take too long to adjust to the lack of a Geordie accent from Glenister. His Lewis is more southerly located, whilst Shrapnel's Morse can be generally situated. Naturally, as a Morse fan myself, I have listened to some of the audiobooks. This being the case, I can report, along with the word of others in the family, that the BBC 2018 adaptations by Guy Meredith leave little to be desired. The supporting artists are most acceptable, and, overall, the readers’ diction, the background effects, and the general presentation of the stories, are of a high standard. The box set inserts give a precis of the “gripping, suspenseful, and entertaining” plot of each story. At the current asking price, and with a running time of around 4.5 hours, the set costs around £3 per disc. This represents excellent value for a quality product. Recommended.
