The round base is heavy, heavy enough to balance out the weight of the arm and a bulb. I like the clamp, it fits on everything from my kitchen table to my work bench. I put an 60w equivalent LED bulb in it, with this bulb it is plenty bright and the bulb stays slightly warm to the touch. You can adjust the lamp area up and down to get a better light angle. I have only two complaints but they are not enough to take a star. 1. The power cord is exceptionally short. Maybe 3 feet. Plan on using an extension cord with it. 2. The clamp is all plastic and could use some kind of rubbery surface on the area it touches the surface you are clamping against. This lamp does not work for my purpose. When I extend the lamp over my book, the lamp tips over.
