It provides good support and I alternate flipping it around a couple minutes each on the gentler side and then the more intense side with the little nodules. I rub my head back and forth in small sections and let the nodules massage more deeply. While I can't say this helps to prevent pain, it does help at the end of the day to relax the neck muscles.
