This purifier sucks air in one side and blows it out the other which I love compared to previous purifiers I've owned (Blue Air 211+, Medify Air MA-25, etc.) which suck air in from 2 or 4 sides and blow it out the top or another side. Since you only have to worry about two sides having enough clearance it makes it easier to place this air purifier near "stuff" and you can set items on the top if you have to. I still keep a smaller unit in my master bedroom (the Medify Air MA-25) but given how much air this unit moves it's really not necessary. Does last a long time? I want something that will last! Thank you!** A: It is a good quality. I haven't been using it lately but used it extensively right after I bought it in Dec 2017 because we had fires approaching Santa Barbara, then smoke lingering for a month until it rained. It worked for that and for cooktop smoke when I burned something on the cooktop. It has 2 different filters - you have to use one or the other. One is for particles such as smoke, the other for toxic things. The smoke worked great for both the fire and the cooktop burns. The one for toxic things didn't completely get rid of the smell generated by a fire in my oven (smelled like the fire had released something toxin in the over walls) so I used my $1000 professional Defendair 500 air purifier (used by professionals for mold, asbestos, etc - I bought from Jon-Don for mold remediation) that is very heavy but has 3 layers of filters, 2 for particles and one for toxins. So unless you are dealing with super heavy toxins, this is great - way way lighter and easier to use than the professional 550 and the blueair looks good in a home. Plus it is way quieter and has variable speeds. The other air purifier I've used is by Faust - it is a bit lighter than the blueair classic but if you add the particle layer on the outside to the charcoal layer on the inside, it isn't very sleek looking like the blue air and it is twice as much money.. All filters mentioned are HEPA which is critical. **Q: how much energy does it use** A: Depending on the selected fan speed the unit will draw 15-65-100 watts (low-med-hi). Divide the selected number by 1000 to get kilowatts used per hour (i.e. kwh). Multiply the kwh by your electrical rate (Cents/kwh) and you have a cost estimate of operation. **Q: Is it normal for unit to give off strong 'off-gassing' smell as soon as you set it up and turn it on? Had to move it out of room.** A: Mine had a strong, toxic smell when it first arrived. I had to run it in an unused room, with the door closed and a window open, for a week before the smell subsided. Since then I’ve been happy with the unit. **Q: Does it sense and remove vocs (volatile organic compounds)? i could not find this mentioned specifically anywhere.** A: Hi there! I've had similar humidifiers from CVS and Rite Aid over the years $39 if I recall right. They were simple to use, no filter. The only down side of those was they didn't hold enough water or move the mist far enough in a small bedroom. BUT THIS is perfect in our large bedroom. It is quiet and holds enough water for a few days of night time use. We don't wake up all dried out and stuffed up anymore.
