The de-icing vehicles, which are driven up to the aircraft to save time, are therefore nothing special in this weather for Senior First Officer Matt Baur and Rainer Lange, the head of the 747 long-haul fleet. Both are long-time employees of Lufthansa's fleet boss Norbert Wölfle, whom they are accompanying today to the west coast of the US. During the first leg of our flight I couldn t help but be in awe at how scenic the view from the cockpit can be from a pilot s perspective while flying at over 30,000ft. The landing in Los Angeles was very smooth and after a short taxi to the gate we join the crew as Capt Wölfle takes us to some of his favorite spots such as Getty Museum, lunch at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica and sunset on Mount Hollywood, in the Griffith Observatory. On the final leg of our flight back to Frankfurt, Capt Wölfle talks about his career and his plans for after retirement. He also discusses a lot of challenges of being a pilot and the disadvantages that comes with being away from home for a long period of time. Soon enough, after leaving the warm sunshine of Los Angeles, it was now time for Capt Wölfle to perform his very last landing at Frankfurt in some not so favorable cold weather. After landing, Capt Wölfle was applauded by his crew and ground staff as he exited the 747 for the very last time. It may seem inconvenient having to read subtitles in order to understand what s going on but it really isn t as inconvenient as it may seem. I thought that the editing of these videos was second to none and what made it even more impressive, was the fact that there were camera views from the ground for takeoff and landings. Cameras were also present in the control tower which captured the Air Traffic Controllers as they communicated with the aircraft. The prices of these DVDs are 29.90 Euros and for what you are getting, I would say it is a very fair price. The overall presentation of these DVDs give you the impression that a major filming company spend months filming and editing to create what I think is the most unique and innovation aviation documentary to date. If you have never seen an aviation documentary before, I would definitely recommend PilotsEYE. HD quality camera work and superb graphics showing information on the flight's progress such as maps routing etc. Also it was good to have the actual ATC communications loud and clear passing through the airspace of the UK, Ireland, the oceanic control centres of 'Shanwick' & Gander on the long range HF frequencies through to the Canadian and US ATC centres.The footage of the world below is breath taking, the North Atlantic, the snow covered areas of Northern Canada and the mountains of the US, Grand Canyon & Las Vegas and the urban sprawl of Los Angeles. The flight deck footage/camerawork is professionally done and the icing on the cake for the programme being Captain Norbert Wolfle's last flight before retirement and his fellow flight deck crew members made this a programme to enjoy explaining the procedures route etc and his humour.The editing on this programme was second to none the take-off sequence from Frankfurt was excellent in both sound and vision showing both the actual take off in full and Captain Wolfle easing the 'stick' as the 747 became airborne.One minor point is the playing of music in some parts when Captain Wolfle was either talking to the first officer or the camera and the blanking out slightly of the ATC transmissions.I can thoroughly recommend this DVD well worth every penny and the return flight is included too. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just what I was hoping and more *by D***M on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 9 February 2012* I really enjoyed seeing the operation of a Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 in such great detail. I don't speak German fluently but that was irrelevant as the details were well explained and the subtitles easy to follow. The camera angles were great which allowed for following the details of operating the aircraft while maintaining focus on key points and combining external views of the takeoff and landing phases of flight. The fact that this was Captain Wölfle's last flight greatly added overall value as he reflected on his career. The extras offer great views of L.A. and a small view into a special personal day with Captain Wölfle and the crew. There is a reasonable amount for the aviation enthusiast, but I think there could have been a little more-more detail with some of the procedures covered.
