TROPICA - Red Silk Cotton Tree (Bombax malabaricum) - 15 SeedsWorth knowing: The Red Silk Cotton Tree - also known as „Shaving Brush“ - belongs to the cotton-tree family. It is in the tropics only that capsules are developed out of which wool-like hairs well. Traditional Japanese futons and pillows used within Zen-meditation have been filled with the wool of the Shaving Brush.Origin: The Shaving Brush is native in India, Australia and Malaysia.Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors any time throughout the year. Soak the seeds in water at room temperature for one day before sowing. Plant them 1 cm deep in moist seed starting soil. Keep evenly warm (20° - 25°C: on heater) until germination follows which should happen within 4 or 5 weeks. About 6 weeks after sprouting, the seedlings can be separated individually.Place / Light: Placed in a sunny to full sunny spot, the Shaving Brush develops into a splendid tub plant with a stem showing thick, strong thorns.Care: Supply the plant with tub plant fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks from April to September.Winter period: The plant is not winter-hardy. It loses its leaves in winter and develops scarlet-red flowers during leaf absence. Continue with watering and place the Shaving Brush bright, with temperatures between 10° to 15°C ( a winter garden is ideal). It may as well be put in a dark location should then, however, only be watered sporadically. In case of a „dark“ over-wintering sprouts will appear later than usual in spring. A pruning to the „old wood“ is not advisable since it might slow down the flowering rate.Bonsai Suitability: No
