The track plus the Festool track saw make easy work of accurate, straight cuts. Yes, you can always use a straight edge and your circular saw to get a straight cut. The Festool system just makes it easy, accurate, and reproducible. If I were buying, and had a commitment to the Festool system, I would probably skip this and get the one with holes for the shelf system: Festool 491622 Guide Rail For 32mm Hole Drilling System. Update after a couple of months: What a fantastic improvement over a simple straight edge. I used the guide rail as a guide for my big circular saw to rip some ipe for a deck step- didn't want to dull the Festool blade on the ipe. The rail worked great as a guide. The downside was the beginning and end of the cut where the saw was not in solid contact with the rail.
