It can burn the roots. If the trees are dormant they won't need food anyway. So I don't feed my plants that are dormant during winter. Come the spring when plants start waking up and budding again it's okay to feed them. They will need the nitrogen then. So just feed them during the normal feeding seasons from spring to fall. I use it for everything, from bonsai specimens to indoor houseplants. If you have a small number of plants, this stuff can last a long time. If you have a large number of plants, I'd suggest the larger bag. The pellets are a pyramidal shape that be pressed into the soil and they stay put nicely. It's a light fertilizer that is made of organic components, so you will have a hard time over-fertilizing and damaging your plants. The instructions are on the bag, just follow the recommended dosages. It's easy to tell when the pellets need to be replaced as they break down completely. This is a go-to fertilizer for bonsai enthusiasts and now I understand why. My plants love this stuff. This is great as an everyday slow release fertilizer.
