Sure, you could use your fingers to rub diaper cream on your baby's bottom.... but then you have hands covered in diaper cream that you just rubbed on a baby's bottom. This is small enough that it won't get in the way on the changing table, and you can keep hand with the cream. It is flexible, with a broad enough tip to easily and quickly spread the cream on the bottom -- almost like a spatula. My daughter doesn't object to it at all either, so it must feel fine. It does have a suction cup on the bottom to stick to a hard surface, which can be handy if you aren't able to wipe it off right away and don't want to get cream on the changing pad.
