The self closure works great and if you want the gate to stay open just open it 90° and it stays until you move it. We needed it to keep our 65 lbs dog out of a room. Our granddaughter also bought one for the top of her stairway because of her toddlers. The "no bottom bar" or threshold was necessary for the top of a staircase.
