I took one apart to see how it works and there are little jagged pieces that engage on the wires, going through the insulation and making contact on the wire inside. Then the stuff on the inside of it seals it from the weather conditions. It makes quick work of attaching two or even more small wires together. If you want to be extra good, you could also strip the wires and twist them together before crimping. But overall, you don't really need to do that. I know 2 wires you don't have to.** A: most cat5 is 26 ga and ive done 3 plenty of times just fine. However that is strictly for POTS/ cat3 and other stuff like access control cables. you cannot splice cat5 in an actual network application with these connectors and maintain 100Mbs speeds or even 10Mb probably. There are punchdown splices available and you can crimp on 2 rj45s and use a F-F coupler or put a rj45 keystone on one end and crimp a male end on the other. There is no possible reason you would ever splice 3 cables together in a cat5 network anyway.
