Review: Since I just posted a review on the Thai Kitchen Spring Onion Soup, I figured I'd write on this Kung Pao Noodle Bowl. The noodles are mostly cooked, but they do need a little hot water for a couple of minutes as per the directions in the microwave, or adding 2-3 tablespoons of water along with the noodles if you are cooking up your own vegetables. I've found I prefer to break the noodles up a little bit while in the clear plastic packet. They are spicy and strongly flavored, so it you double the volume with vegetables it is still quite flavorful. My younger son says these are simply too spicy, which comes as no surprise. My teen daughter, who has a better palate, and is actually a little pickier than I am, likes these quite a bit. We've added red cabbage, shredded carrots, yellow and wild onions, and garlic grass to this. As a warning, unlike these insta-bowls with the dried noodles, the sealed moist ones will develop a terrible taste if you discover one three years old hiding in the back of your pantry. They develop an deeper off-brown shade instead of the fresher cream/tan color, and taste awful. That takes over three years, so it's not a problem with the product, just don't purchase these as food for your emergency stash... I just did it on the stove top in a frying pan with glass lid. I used the plastic bowl it all came in. Opened all the pouches and mixed things together with the noodles but it did not mix well. The bowl is too small for effective mixing and the noodles are too stuck together to get them separated in this small bowl, so use a larger bowl, two times the size for easier mixing or don't bother with the mixing part. Just put all the ingredients in the supplied bowl and dump everything together in the fry pan when it is ready. I preheated a 12" fry pan on high, added about 1/4 cup water, it instantly boiled and steamed. I then quickly dumped in all the ingredients from the bowl into the pan and then covered the pan. After 20 seconds, I stirred the contents mixing everything and the noodles separated due to the steam and heat. I covered again for about 10 seconds and then stirred and re-covered and kept repeating this. Occasionally, I also lifted the pan off the stove to reduce heat and keep from burning the noodles, then removed cover and stirred, then covered again. I was primarily watching how much liquid was left in the pan and when it seemed to be gone and it was just thick sauce I was then finished. There are 4 pouches, (noodles, liquid sauce, peanuts, spices.) If you are afraid of burning this doing the quick high heat method I did I would suggest adding the spices to the 2 Tablespoons of water the directions ask for if microwaving. I might use boiling water and let it sit for 2 minutes. While it's sitting warm up your pan on medium heat, then add another 1 table spoon of water and then add the spices in the water mix and all the other ingredients to the pan and cover and stir and repeat until everything is hot. Be ready to add small amounts of water if the sauce is getting too thick. Remove when sauce is at the right viscosity for you and the noodles are heated up enough for eating. Everything is all ready cooked so you can't go wrong no matter what method you use to heat everything up. fry it, bake it, microwave it...it doesn't matter. The consistency may not be "perfect" but it will still be good. The only way to ruin this is to burn it or over cook it so the noodles are a big sticky glob. Once you start stirring, stay at the stove and keep stirring and evaluating the consistency of the sauce to determine when to remove. On my high heat method it was less than 2 minutes with a lot of lifting the pan off the burner, keeping the lid on to steam and lots of stirring. If using the med heat method I would guess about 4 - 5 minutes of cooking/heating, stirring and covering time. **Q: Why are they $2.43 a bowl or $16 a 6 pack everywhere else but they are charging almost $30 for 6. That’s crazy. It is quite simple to prepare in a microwave and is very enjoyable. It doesn't take long at all. Just make sure not to use too much water or you'll dilute the flavor from the sauce. I don't do an exact measurement. I turn on the faucet and let a bit get on the bottom. It doesn't need a whole lot. This may require some experimentation for each person. This is my favorite boxed meal. * I put the noodles in before the water. Just let the water get around the noodles, not on them. - As for those with peanut allergies, I don't know if there are peanuts somehow in the sauce or anything, but there is a package of peanuts that comes with this that you can use or not.
