Review: Exactly what I wanted, with minor quirks - My first impression was that the display unit was about twice as tall as I expected it to be! This means it stands out a bit more than I'd like, but it also makes it nice and clear to read. The plastic finish is nicer than I expected, and the backlight is nice and even. It does not feel like a cheap product. I find the display easy to read, but the viewing angles are a bit restricted. In practice this isn't a huge problem for me, as I have it on a table below eye level, pointed directly towards me, but it does mean that if I move my head to the side just a bit then I can see ghosts of the display segments that aren't currently active. It is not easy to read the display if you put it above your eye level. It is fine at eye level or below. I was disappointed that there are no options for date and time format. I had assumed I would be able to choose to have a 24 hour clock, but it's not possible. It had also not occurred to me that the date would be displayed only in American month/day format with Sunday as the first day of the week. Thankfully, you can at least choose between °C and °F for the temperature display, otherwise it would have been totally useless to me! The desertcart listing makes reference to the clock automatically adjusting for daylight saving time. However, the UK version of the product manual does not mention that feature, so I think it must be disabled for the UK market. If you look from the right angle, you can make out the unused outlines of various time zone designators on the display, but there are none for the UK. I'm actually glad it didn't have this feature, because unless it was radio controlled it would run the risk of becoming obsolete if they ever change the rules about when the clocks change, or stop changing them altogether. The wireless signal range is excellent. I zip-tied the sensor to a small pole and hid it in a hedge behind a shed, where it will be shaded all day. This means the signal has to travel diagonally through practically the entire house to reach the indoor display. This is probably near to the worst case scenario I could have contrived in terms of signal propagation, but I still get the full four bars of signal, even though there are several solid brick walls in the way. The outdoor sensor has weathered a few storms so far and seems fine. It opens at the bottom, without a seal, which hopefully means any water that gets inside will be able to run out of the bottom. It seems like a good design. The temperature readings seem accurate enough, and they roughly agree with my other thermometers, though they are only displayed to the nearest whole degree and are perhaps a fraction on the low side. The trend indicators, which say whether the temperature is rising, falling, or holding steady, are very useful. I'm not so concerned about the accuracy of the humidity readings, but they seem in the right ballpark. Counterintuitively, the min/max functionality does not tell you the minimum or maximum readings of the last 24 hours. Instead, it tells you the minimum and maximum readings since midnight. So, if you press "max" at one minute past midnight, then the chances are it will just tell you the current temperature and humidity; not very useful. I can see why they did this; it is a simpler algorithm requiring a fraction of the memory needed for a rolling 24 hour min/max; but it doesn't suit the way I'd like to use the feature. Finally, there is the moon phase indicator. To me, this is a bit of a gimmick. You might think the display for this would be self-explanatory, and you'd be right. It's just a straightforward visual representation of what the moon will look like, with light representing light and dark representing dark. But the documentation made it more confusing than it needed to be by showing illustrations for seemingly every scenario, except the waning gibbous that was actually on the display at the time. To add to the confusion, the manual shows the light portion of the moon as being divided into segments while the dark portion is solid black. This is the reverse of what happens on the real display, where it is the dark portion that has segments and the light portion that is solid, which had me second-guessing whether they'd printed it in reverse colour or something. The manual is otherwise very clear, well written and thorough. I was particularly impressed by the the clarity with which they describe the temperature ranges in which alkaline and lithium primary batteries will operate in the outdoor sensor. Battery life is fine. I've been using the unit for six months. There are indicators on the indoor unit which should show when either the indoor or the outdoor batteries need changing, but the batteries are still going strong so far and I've no reason to doubt they will continue for many months to come. Overall, I give this product five stars. I wanted an uncomplicated wireless indoor/outdoor thermometer and hygrometer that could also tell me the day of the week and month at a glance, and I got exactly that. Its imperfections are minor.
