Industrial strength rubber has a smell that lingers for a while. the smell goes away after a few weeks. To speed up this process, simply was them in soap & water. I either turned the AC off and got hot during the summer or left it on and was awoken by the loud rattling sound whenever the AC kicked on. The AC is fully functional and cools well, and I didn't really want to pay thousands to replace something that works. But, after I broke down and got a quote for a new AC, I finally got motivated to try to figure out what was really going on with this noise. I thought it was a problem inside the old compressor itself (built in 1992), but when I saw these pads, I figured I'd try to at least isolate some of the sound. After installing the pads, initially the noise changed but didn't go away. It was still loud, but in a different way. I then tightened all of the bolts around the AC unit case, and the noise changed slightly again. Finally, I leaned on the top of the AC unit and miraculously, the noise stopped. I figured out that I could put a brick on that top corner, adding more weight down onto the rubber pad, isolating the noise. I'd tried this sort of thing before without the pads, and it didn't work. So, ultimately, fixing this noise was a combination of the isolating pads and a bit of work tightening bolts and pushing on the unit. How can these be secured w/o reducing efficacy?** A: I don't know that you have to secure the pads. I used my isolation pads on a 2000 w Honda generator that would walk away from you. The pads stopped the vibration from transferring from the generator to the wood deck. I was very happy with the vibration pads and would recommend them for your hvac. **Q: Could i put this in between a wall speaker mount and the wall to stop vibrations from traveling through out my house?** A: I don't think the pads would work in a vertical position between the item that vibrates and the wall. For most effective use I think the pads have to have the weight of the item (speaker) directly on the pads between the floor and speakers. **Q: A big fridge upstairs is creating a noisy low hum that's driving me crazy downstairs. Will placing this under the fridge stop all the noise/hum?** A: I think it will! I bought mine because my portable air conditioner was driving my downstairs neighbor crazy (I felt terrible when I found out.) These completely eliminated the problem **Q: Will these work for massage feature on adjustable bed frames?** A: They would probably work well for this. However, I would be concerned about the initial rubber smell inside and they might react with the flooring finish or possibly carpet depending on the type of materials used. You might want to wrap them in some type of material to prevent a chemical type of reaction with the flooring. A LOT. Don't use them in an enclosed area that you can smell. I used them outside to put under my A/C condensers. It seems to make a pretty significant difference in noise. Before, you could feel my A/C vibrating the wall on the side of my house and it was super annoying especially when trying to sleep. It definitely isolates and dampens the noise quite a bit. Don't buy it expecting to make your unit silent, but it will make a difference especially if you have an older A/C unit that's prone to vibration. But be advised - it does smell pretty bad, I'm sure it's just part of the manufacturing process.
