It is solid metal, no plastic, not even on the whistle. Yes the grip is silicone, along with the knob on the lid, but that appears to be molded over a strong metal handle. Handle is thick and strong, though a magnet doesn't stick to it, but one is attracted to rest of kettle. The handle is held on with nuts and bolts, so I don't expect it to pull or melt off, and if it does, can be repaired with a washer under the bolt and or nut. I can't get over how well it is made, and at this low price $20USD. The base is large enough to fully cover a 15,000 BTU (extra large) gas burner when turned on hi, though the manufacturer recommends against this. And you can see, that it looks awesome with other stainless and iron cookware. Looks like it was part of the 'set' though those pots are over 20 years old. Stainless cookware is awesome, and this is another stainless item in my collection. You won't be sorry you bought it.
