This did the job I intended for it to do. He is 3 1/2 and is really into trains, especially Thomas. He also has an interest in building things. This combined his interests quite well. ETA: I purchased 3 of these sets (Thomas, Emily and Percy). He played with them without any additional blocks, so additional blocks aren't necessary. Review: Do not expect LEGO quality from Mega Blocks - I am realizing now, that Mega Blocks blocks don't really fit each other well. The train keeps falling apart. It is much cheaper than LEGO equivalent though, and for a reason.
