It sounds all cheery and fun, until that mysterious sinister element starts cloaking the story little by little.The pace picks up rapidly and had me turning pages to find out more. The main characters are complex and carry the story well on their shoulders. The suspense burns with an explosion in the second half. While initially Josie seems like a promising podcast story to Alix, only later does she discover her rather interesting family.The author layers the story with heavy themes and a strong plot line. The backdrop, descriptions and emotions all play an elemental role in this compelling narration. For all those who love this genre, it is a must read. This was my first Lisa Jewell novel, can't wait to read more of her books. I never thought I’d find a character more despicable than Amy Dunne from Gone Girl, but I did. Not getting into that to avoid spoilers but this book was completely crazy.We meet Alix & Josie who share a birthday and that’s where the similarity ends. Alix seems like she has it all, a perfect life, a doting husband, a successful podcast and she’s wealthy. Josie comes off as someone who is on the spectrum, had a traumatic life and barely any money. Josie starts narrating her life story and Alix, looking for a new topic for her podcast, takes an interest. That’s all we need to know before getting into this book.The entire plot is harrowing, I know I will have difficulty sleeping at night for next couple of days. The writing is taut and so is the story - this felt very real, like something that could happen in real life.
