Review: Excellent & Inexpensive - Product: Etekcity Lasergrip 800 Digital Infrared Thermometer Gun Rating: 4.5 of 5 (excellent) I cook a lot with cast iron flat griddles, both small and large ... a surface wholly unsuited for corded digital temperature probes, because at the sort of temperatures they’re most commonly used at (450-600F) if the droopy cord connecting the probe to the sensor touches the surface for anything longer than a brief instant, it’s toast, and you have to buy a new one. I’ve ruined several probes that way over the years, and it rapidly becomes annoying. To date, my favorite solution by far is one of the latest generation hand-held wireless Infrared Sensor Guns like the Etekcity Lasergrip 800, which cost me an extremely reasonable and affordable $25 usd in 2017. Anytime I heat a pot of oil for deep-frying, or use a saucier to reduce braising liquid into a thick sweet glaze, or if I use my griddles for things like making Lebanese mountain bread, homemade tortillas, quesadillas, pancakes, fermented dosa crepes, pressed sandwiches (paninis & tortas), burgers, steaks, bacon, blackened fish, eggs, et al., the Etekcity 800 is incredibly handy for rapidly spot-checking the temperature status of your griddle (so you can finesse it accordingly), and also finding any patterns of uneven heating that occur in your setup {TIP: CI is a poor thermal conductor, therefore the slower you heat it, the more evenly it heats}. Different foods like different temperatures too. For example, I like to work at around 500-550F when searing off freshly stretched mountain bread (see photo), which is very thin, and prone to overcooking if your griddle/plancha is too hot. Things like crepes and dosas are even more temperature sensitive, and a thermal gun is indispensable for helping you to stay in the ideal temp range, for significantly better results and less food waste. Likes: * Ergonomic: It’s very fast (under 1 sec), accurate (+/- 2%), lightweight (4 oz), easy to use (very simple and intuitive - reading the manual is purely optional), easy to read, and has a thermal range (-58F to +1382F) that fully covers all my needs, and with plenty of room to spare. * Battery: The specs list 14hrs of cumulative runtime per 9v battery, which is more than enough to last you a year or more, even with regular daily use. * Sensor Aperture: This unit features a sensor with a nice high DSR rating of 16:1 (read: tight aperture), meaning if you hold it at the recomended distance of 14.17 inches, the circular diameter of the region being sensed centered on the siming dot is 1/16th of that, or roughly 0.88 inch (about midway in size between a Nickel and a Quarter). Minor Nits: * Battery (-1/2 star): I’m a big believer in eco-friendly rechargeable, but the designers of this gun opted for a 9v battery design, which while great for low-draw devices like smoke detectors is easily my least favorite, and least efficient formats when it comes to rechargeables. Although there may be some valid technical reasons for the 9v use, I really wish they’d gone with 3.7v 18650’s instead, or perhaps 1.2v AAAs, both of which are highly friendly to low-self-discharge 1000+ cycle rechargeables, and are easily available. * Sensor Reticle (-1/2 star): First, some disambiguation - although this product prominently mentions “laser” in the name, it only uses the laser to provide a single bright dot (your aiming reticle) so you can see where you’re pointing the sensor - the laser is NOT the actual sensing mechanism, nor does the diameter of the dot reflect the diameter of the region being sensed, which many may find confusing or unintuitive. A better pointer design would be a laser ring (multiple dots), instead of a singular dot, with the diameter of the ring matching the DSR rating of the sensor aperture, so that you can see EXACTLY the size of the area being sensed at any given range. Despite these 2 minor nits, I still highly recommend this device, which has become one of my top 10 favorite culinary tools in my kitchen.
Review: Works Great for my Blackstone grill - I use this to monitor the temperature of my Blackstone grill, large iron skillet, and pavement during dog walks. It has been a huge benefit to grilling on the flat top, as that grill can get very hot in a hurry. It's good quality and pretty accurate.

## Features

- NOT FOR HUMAN: Temperature readings from these devices are inanimate objects. for humans or animals will not be correct. For the best accuracy the distance between thermometer and object of measurement should approximately be 14.17 inches
- BETTER ACCURACY: The distance to spot ratio is 16:1 meaning the laser grip 800 can accurately measure targets at smaller measurement area with the same distance compared with other thermometers with DSR 12:1 or 8:1
- TARGET QUICKER: Measure surface temperature ranging from -58℉ to 1382℉/ -50℃ to 750℃ you can choose the unit from ℉/℃ A built-in laser gives you the precision to hone in on the exact space you want to measure
- ADDED FUNCTIONS: The LCD screen is backlit it also has an auto-off function to extend the battery life and features a low battery indicator so you never accidentally run out of juice (battery included)
- VERSATILE DESIGN: Infrared technology makes this thermometer handy to measure surface temperature of various objects. Use it when you are cooking and barbecuing performing auto maintenance doing home repairs and a host of other tasks

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the distance that it can detect with accuracy?**
A: I calibrated mine by pointing it at a cup of boiling water and it was within a couple of degrees. I usually use it at fairly close range (wheel bearings, tires, heating pads, etc) so haven't done any tests to determine long range accuracy but because of the physics of infrared I have no reason to believe it would be any less accurate at longer range. However it is rated at 12:1 spot ratio which means at twelve feet it would nominally be measuring the temperature of a one-foot circle and the farther removed you are the large the circle you would be averaging. One reason I chose this model was because its 12:1 rating was tighter than many other brands which were rated at 10:1 and 8:1. I have also used it to detect cold spots in my walls while standing back 8-12 feet and it has done this reliably.

**Q: Hi i would like to use this device to measure my cast iron coal stove surface temperature. The range will be 400-700 degrees**
A: I use this device for my wood burning stove that's in my outdoor sauna. I aim it at the side of the burning chamber and it works great. I know when it's 600F or higher, that there is a good burn inside. When the temp drops to 500F or lower, I know it's time to add wood!

**Q: I am getting a LO reading what does this mean?**
A: I would imagine that means your battery us low. I would change the battery and see if that addresses the issue.

**Q: Could I use it to measure oven temperature. through the oven glass and check for variation? i.e. front, back, middle and check for temp/variation?**
A: Rather than tell you "I don't know", I will tell you what I think the answer is. I think that because the glass gets hot it will skew the readings. You may get just the temp of the glass and no internal temp or an average of the two. Do you know this instrument only reads radiated heat? It can't see air so it simply Looks through the air without feeling any hot or cold.Your question has peaked my interest - - - - - "To the kitchen men! Turm the oven on. There's some experimenting to do!" I'll add some more to this when I have the answer. ; ^)In a word, the answer is - - - "No" my oven has double glass the interior glass was 450° while the exterior glass was only 75° the ambient room temperate was 68°. Good idea too bad it won't work,
