If you want to bypass it, you have to add another valve. **Q: Is there a way to know if the filter cartridge needs replacing by looking at the cartridge?** A: I used this on a well system. The way i new to replace the filter was if the filter had turned a dark grey color. For my use, this was approximately once per month.
