I used disposable solo cups to mix a little at a time - less water than you think you need. After pointing it in, sprinkle some ashes in the surface and it will totally blend in to your old mortar.
Review: Easy to use, durable - Used as directed,it worked amazingly well to repair and in some places replace the lining of the firebox of my wood burning cookstove.
