My plug in is not that handy so it makes more sense to me to leave it plugged in all the time. Once it turns itself off, it does not stay hot so leaving it on is not a problem. **Q: How long does the iron stay hot enough to iron and produce steam before you have to reconnect to the base?** A: You must continually put the iron back in the base to maintain the temperature. Don’t mistake this for a corded iron that stays blasting hot continuously. You must replace the iron in the base to keep it hot. **Q: how much does this iron weigh** A: Just the iron, not including the base, 44 ounces.....or, 2.75 pounds. That's with an empty tank. Add another nearly 6 ounces for the water. **Q: How much does the iron itself weigh when using with a full tank? Is tap water OK to use in it?** A: This iron is smaller than my corded iron. Weight is what I consider light, even full of water. I have RA in right hand, using this iron is less stressful on my hand. I don't have the weight or need to grip as tightly as the corded iron. I only use distilled water in irons. We keep distilled water for husbands CPAP machine, so it is always available.
