Literally bakes, steams, grills, can slow cook and everything. You can buy the ranges stuff or just use your own to do almost any food you like. I've only reviewed one thing with '6 star if it was an option' which was a WMF pressure cooker, but this has just been engraved with the same prestige (which is a very fine accolade indeed from someone who has in other reviews said the only way you can do BBQ spare ribs is on a proper coal fired BBQ!)!6 STARS IF IT WAS AN OPTION :DLONG REVIEW (mid June):Couldn't wait for two days, when it was either a tossup between using this or the coal tub - weather dependent - so though I'd give it an evening test run.I already have an Andrew James electric BBQ which has a griddle plate to cook on which I honestly think it a bit naff (and quite pricey at £100). A lot of the reviewers of that product would probably disagree with me so it does lead me to believe that mine may have a faulty thermo. If that's the case apologies to Mr James, I guess I should have returned it.Anyway onto this beast - quick history - how did I get to here? In short I was very close to buying another Andrew James electric, the one with stand, half grill, half griddle. After dismissing that I was looking at a Severin one, clocking in at 2.5kwh (higher than this) that looked to fit the bill. Unfortunately, for the wallet at least, I remembered the reason I got the Andrew James one in the first place was that it's a kettle BBQ, with that all important lid. Off to google for electric BBQ lid search and I'm straight back on Amazon arriving here. (FWIW there was a cheaper seller on eBAY, but I plumped for Amazon regardless of their tax morals anyway. Let's be honest, who wouldn't avoid it if they could!).Okay, so now I'm faced with a thought in mind of still going for the 40ish quid Andrew James grill/griddle to add to a griddle only one I don't thinks up to scratch, a Severin at 70ish quid, or this at 150. This fits the bill..... but ... absolutely nowhere can I find any reviews on how it performs..........Until, after going through website after website (about 6) that sells it (anywhere from 119 on ebay to 180 elsewhere) I find a Dutch site that has reviews going back to 2010!!! (Where was it last year or beyond!) Okay so there only 13 of said reviews and I had to get a Firefox browser language translator (free BTW) to read them but it was averaging 8/10. On the downside, by the time I'd found these reviews, even though it was a site I clicked on earlier as I was after price comparison (and as it was in euro's, promtly dismissed) I had by then ordered the product!JUST A QUICK CAPITALS NOTE: If you go searching on your own for reviews of outdoorchef 420 bear in mind there is a gas grill as well, and I think even maybe a coal one. They have good * ratings (which I hope is a good thing) but finding a review on the electric version is very damn difficult (unless I'm just being a chump!)Right, onto the product itself.Unboxing and assembly: Well packaged and protected, most parts already assembled. The most I had to do was screw the underlid plate onto the lid handle with a screwdriver. Whole assembly took around 20 mins from opening the box, having the parts all over the floor and to being fully ready to go (apart from washing the grill).Design: Basically it's a kettle bbq, but without the coal. The parts are the bowl, into which fits a drip tray, then a reflective dish (foil lined, these are replaceable and amazon sell them. It's possible that tin foil would do the same job though). After than the grill element goes in and then the grill plate. Lastly there's the lid to pop on before the unit fits snugly into the stand (it doesn't have a lock-in to the stand but I think it's very sturdy anyhow).Using: The first thing up for the grill was a foodstuff that should never tar the steel of a bbq grillplate, electric, coal or otherwise - vegetarian sausages! I set it to level 4 (out of 7), it took around 5-10 minutes to preheat which is known when the light stops flashing and stays on, and did them with the lid on (turning twice) for the recommended 15 minutes and they turned out excellent. Later on at level 5 I did a chicken skewer and some proper sausages which took longer than they would on a conventional coal bbq but again still turned out excellent (maybe I'll try level 6 or 7 next time). Level 7 on the unit should be constant 300C heat - other levels turn on and off with the thermostat up to certain temperatures that get mentioned in the manual. Note to self: tape these temps to a leg of the stand for reference!My next use was to make some rhubarb and pork burgers and also some quorn and rhubarb burgers. I was mixing between heat level 5 and 6 and it took quite some time (30-40 mins) to do the burgers as I literally filled the grill. I also did some grilled courgettes and a foil wrapped (half microwaved) baked potato which again was a success on this session.The next use was chicken thighs wrapped in forest ham with a chilli pineapple and red pepper sauce. Again at a higher heat level I popped them on the grid to sear them for a few minutes and then popped the lid down, reduced the heat a notch and gave them around 40 mins. Again, excellent results.Lastly, for the third day in a row of using it I made some marinated skewered lamb and mushrooms. Also grilled some bread at the end of the cooking time which I charred a fair bit (my fault).It doesn't seem to be too problematic adjusting the temperatures and timings to get things done. Obviously I could also use a food thermometer for complete safety but so far it's been great with the old lob on and grill method!Cleaning!: The reviews I've read that I've had to translate seem to mostly praise the easiness to clean this unit. Personally I don't find it any quicker than cleaning a coal bbq. Maybe I'm overdoing it but basically I strip the whole thing apart again, the lid gets a brass scour as does the basin and the grill grate until all the grease or the charring has gone. The element gets a wipe with a sponge. The reflector plate gets a mix of both dependant on what I've cooked - I have to be careful with this as I could tear the foil too soon if I use steel wool and while I don't think a cover of heavy duty tin foil from any local supermarket wouldn't suffice as a recover I've stuck with the replacement packs for now. The drip tray gets boiling water poured in, then out, and then gets washed with the pots. I then hose or shower rinse the whole lot down being careful not to get water in the electric connector parts. Actually after writing that it's probably quicker to clean a coal bbq!Other things to mention. There appears to be loads of 'accessories' for this thing out there, or at least for this range. I've ordered a cast iron gratin dish that can sit below the grill and there is certainly a cast iron griddle plate available which I've order. I've clocked that there is also a pizza stone and a perforated pizza tray but beware that some items are in various sizes so it's worth checking the outdoorchef website for compatibility. The one thing is they are all designed to fit so are a bit pricey IMO. I'll write reviews on them as I use them as the deliveries came after this barbecue weekend and the rains are due!It says to store 'indoors'. Fair enough I guess even though it's an 'outdoor only use' unit. The kettle comes away from the tripod so that can go in the shed while the unit can stay safely inside. I don't think I've anything more to mention.
