It holds mugs wonderfully and has stopped my 2YO Visually impaired son from knocking over hot tea on my desk and prevented injuries and damaged equipment. It also holds glasses, cans and bottles either with or without the insert, depending on the width of the beverage. Alas, as you can see from my images, my coaster seemed to break when I tried to reposition it... If you think it's hard to remove the coaster try just the base.
