## Overview

The Statesman as Thinker is a 2022 hardcover by Daniel J. Mahoney, offering richly researched portraits of iconic leaders like Cicero, Burke, Lincoln, and Churchill. It highlights their courage and moderation in defending liberty across turbulent eras, blending classical and Christian wisdom to inspire today’s readers seeking thoughtful leadership models.

## Description

In his newest book, Daniel J. Mahoney offers refreshing historical antidotes to the displays of despotism in today's political arena. "A brilliantly written and researched tribute to the pantheon of classically trained and thinking men of action." ―Victor Davis Hanson In The Statesman as Thinker , Daniel J. Mahoney provides thoughtful and elegant portraits of statesmen who struggled to preserve freedom during times of crisis: Cicero using all the powers of rhetoric to preserve republican liberty in Rome against Caesar’s encroaching autocracy; Burke defending ordered liberty against Jacobin tyranny in revolutionary France; Tocqueville defending liberty and human dignity against blind reaction, democratic impatience, and revolutionary fanaticism; Lincoln preserving the American republic and putting an end to chattel slavery; Churchill defending liberty and law and opposing Nazi and Communist despotism; de Gaulle defending the honor of France during World War II; and Havel fighting Communism before 1989 and then leading the Czech Republic with dignity and grace. Mahoney makes sense of the mixture of magnanimity and moderation that defines the statesman as thinker at his or her best. That admirable mixture of greatness, courage, and moderation owes much to classical and Christian wisdom and to the noble desire to protect the inheritance of civilization against rapacious and destructive despotic regimes and ideologies.

Review: Great Thinkers as Leaders - Excellent biographical commentaries on Edmund Burke, Alexis Tocqueville, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, and Charles DeGaulle. For example, "Burke was the first thinker and statesman to discern the true nature of ideological despotism. This is among his greatest insights and contributions to Western political thought."
Review: The book was disappointing - I was disappointed, having read Mahoney before. The early chapters cover Burke, Washington, Toqueville, Lincoln, and Churchill. The latter are about de Gaulle and Havel, and both struck me as special pleading. the words great and greatness showed up so often in the de Gaulle chapter that it seemed the author was trying to convince me of something that required no convincing in the earlier chapters. The conclusion's mention of Trump (although not as a statesman) was strange and didn't seem appropriate to the thrust of the book. Most of the content is not original thought, but draws on one or two major biographies of the subject. Before the de Gaulle chapter I was ready to give 4 stars, and after the conclusion I thought about 2 stars.
