The line in the Wiki seems to be incorrect causing me no end of headaches. However. There was light at the end of the tunnel in the gause of Open Media Vault. This is software used to create a NAS drive out of a raspberry Pi which is exactly what I wanted. Not only did Open Media Vault allow me to find and format the drives but it also allowed me to create Raid array out fo them making them appear as one drive.
